About

Heya and welcome to The Start Menu.

This website is for all those who love to cook, and may even be into tinkering with a recipe to get it just right.

The general idea is this, we post a recipe , you take that recipe and make it.  Tell us in the comments how it turned out for you, what you changed in the recipe, even drop in a photo of it! Its always great to compare the difference in how each oven, kitchen, person creates the same things, and its even better when somebody who had a lot of problems can see how somebody else changed it to work for them.

If you have your own recipe website, by all means link in, you can never have to many recipes! If you want to be notified of the new recipe for this week, then sign up on the right hand column.

If you have any recipes you have created yourself and want others to try, by all means email them to me ( liz at velofille.com), ill credit you and post it and we'll all give it a go.

All and any recipes will follow, not just the ones you see.

April 5, 2011 at 12:03 pm , by admin

Ingredients

  1. half cup brown sugar
  2. 2 eggs
  3. 3-4 cups of other ingredients (oats, rice pops, fruit, nuts, etc – you choose!)

Instructions

  1. Mix brown sugar with egg until smoth.
  2. Mix all of your other ingredients into that mixture until its fairly dry and stuff (too wet just does not work).
  3. Line a slice tray or similar with grease proof paper
  4. Pack the slice mix into the tray hard.
  5. Bake in oven for 30 mins at 180C

Variations

Here are a few ways I have varied the ingredient list

Kids like this one, its light and tasty

  • 1 cup oats
  • 1 cup Rice pops
  • 1/2 cup coconut shredded
  • 1/2 cup Cashew nuts
  • 1/2 cup choc chips

When I’m cycling i like something more like this

  • 2 cups oats
  • 1/2 cup variable nuts
  • 1/2 cup sultanas
  • 1/2 cup choc chips

Try a few variations of your own dried fruits, nuts, whatever you like. I often also melt a bit of cooking chocolate and do a squiggle (chocolate is key to making children think its nice!). You could probably just use pre-made muesli in a rush :)

Rich Spaghetti with meatballs – Quick and Easy

March 10, 2011 at 8:31 pm , by admin

Ingredients

  • 500gm Mince (1lb)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 C flour
  • 1-2 Diced Onion
  • 500gm Pasta (1 bag)
  • 800gm Can Tomatoes (1 large can)
  • 4T Sugar
  • 2T Sweet Basil
  • 1T Oregano
  • 1T red wine vinegar  (Optional but amazing!)
  • 2t Cornflour
  • Grated Cheese of your favourite type

Instructions

  1. Mix Mince, 2 eggs, Onion
  2. Add in enough flour to make it dough like
  3. Make 1cm(1/2″) sized meatballs on a tray
  4. Put meatballs in the oven at 200C (200F) for 20mins whilst you do the rest
  5. Put pasta on to boil as per instructions on packet
  6. Empty tin of diced tomatoes into another pot
  7. Mix in, Sugar, Oregano,Sweet Basil, red wine vinegar
  8. Simmer sauce for 5 mins.
  9. Mix cornflour with enough water so it does not lump, and mix into the sauce until its as thick as desired .
I serve this up with paste on the plate, sauce over the pasta (usually in the middle), sprinkle the cheese over the top, then place meatballs in the center. If you are vegetarian just drop the meatballs or make vegetarian meatballs (vegeballs!).
It might sound complex, but because most of the food cooks at the same time its a very quick meal to make in a hurry.
This meal will feed 5-6 people easily.
